Hatchet 3 (2013) film analysis

Hatchet 3 is Hatchet's horror film of 2013. It follows the murderous adventures of Victor Crowley across Louisiana's Honey Island Swamp. Kane Hodder stars as Victor Crowley, Brian Quinn plays Deputy Winslow and Rileah Vanderbilt plays Misty.

The film's greatest strength is the use of real-world special effects. Hatchet 3 uses a majority of makeup effects that are practical and sets. This is a departure from many horror movies today that rely heavily upon CG effects. The film also has several truly terrifying moments.

The cast delivers a solid performance, with Kane Hodder standing out as an incredibly intimidating villain. It's like a slasher film from the 1980s and the dialogue is somewhat funny and snarky. There are also several hilarious moments that provide a sense of some humor in the midst of the terrifying action.

Unfortunately, the film's budget was limited to one million dollars. This means that a lot of locations in the movie are re-used from earlier films. One boat house is used twice, and the majority of it feels like a rerun of other films. Hatchet or Hatchet movie review Hatchet 3 II may find it familiar, and this can lead to the movie feeling too familiar.

Overall, I was impressed by Hatchet 3 even though it felt very similar to prior installments in the series. It also offered plenty of gory thrills and entertaining performances from the actors.
